1. Planning and Safety

This prevents accidental strikes that could cause injury or service outages. Check with local building departments or HOAs for permits and regulations, including minimum burial depths and setback requirements from property lines or septic systems .

2. Material Selection

Use fiber optic cables rated for direct burial, often armored or gel-filled loose tube designs, to resist moisture, crushing, and rodent damage. Armored cables are recommended in areas with high mechanical risk, such as rocky soil or road crossings. Polyethylene (PE) jackets are preferred for outdoor durability and chemical resistance .

3. Trenching or Plowing
