Standard Overview

The ANSI/TIA-568.3-E standard, published in 2020, is the latest version governing premises optical fiber cabling and components, replacing the previous ANSI/TIA-568.3-D edition . It defines requirements for fiber cables, connectors, connecting hardware, and patch cords, including performance, testing, and measurement methods . The standard also incorporates updates for OM5 multimode fiber and OS1a single-mode fiber, along with color coding for connectors, including lime for OM5 hardware .

Connector Color Coding

  • Single-mode connectors: Blue (standard) and Green (angle-polished, APC)
  • Multimode connectors:
    • OM1 (62.5/125 µm): Beige
    • OM2 (50/125 µm): Orange
    • OM3/OM4 (50/125 µm, laser-optimized): Aqua
    • OM5 (50/125 µm, wideband): Lime
  • Patch cords and outlets follow the same color coding as TIA-598 .

Polarity Rules

The standard specifies methods to maintain correct fiber polarity for duplex and array connections:

  • Duplex (LC, SC) systems:
    • Consecutive-fiber positioning: Adapters installed in opposite orientations at each end; fibers attached in consecutive order (1,2,3,4…)
    • Reverse-pair positioning: Adapters installed in the same orientation; fibers attached in consecutive order on one end and reversed on the other (2,1,4,3…)
  • Array connectors (MPO/MTP): Five sample polarity methods (A, B, C, U1, U2) are described; consistent selection throughout an installation is recommended .

Performance and Loss Specifications

  • Connector mating loss: Maximum 0.75 dB for both multimode and single-mode fibers
  • Optical return loss: 20 dB for multimode, 26 dB for single-mode (APC: 55 dB)
  • These values account for prepolished/splice connectors and array connectors like MPOs .

Testing and Compliance

  • OTDR testing is included as an approved method
  • Patch panels and outlets must provide unique identification for each fiber
  • Outlet boxes must accommodate at least two fibers .
