- Distance: Longer runs may require upsizing to compensate for voltage drop.
- Protection devices: The wire must match the rating of the main breaker or fuse in the distribution box .
Grounding and Neutral
The ground wire is usually sized equal to or slightly smaller than the phase conductors, often green/yellow insulated, and connected to the grounding terminal block. The neutral wire carries unbalanced current and should match the phase conductor size for safety .
Practical Guidelines
- Lighting circuits: 14 AWG copper wire is common for 15A breakers.
- Power outlets: 12 AWG copper wire for 20A breakers.
- Heavy appliances or motors: 10 AWG or larger, depending on amperage.
- Always follow local electrical codes (NEC, IEC, or regional standards) for wire sizing, breaker coordination, and safety .
