Fiber optic patch cords are available in a full range of specifications

Fiber optic patch cords are factory-terminated cables with standardized fiber types, connectors, lengths, and performance ratings designed for reliable interconnection in optical networks.

Fiber Types

Patch cords are available in single-mode (OS1/OS2) and multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5) fibers, including bend-insensitive variants like G.657A1/A2 for tight spaces and FTTH applications . Single-mode fibers are typically used for long-distance backbone connections, while multimode fibers are common in intra-rack and horizontal patching within data centers .

Connector Types

Common connectors include LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, LSH, MTRJ, and MU . LC connectors are dominant in high-density environments due to their 1.25mm ferrule, which allows higher port density compared to SC connectors. Duplex patch cords often feature A/B polarity labeling for easy identification . APC (angled physical contact) connectors provide higher return loss (>60 dB) for single-mode applications .

Cable Construction

  • Jacket Material: Flame-retardant, low-smoke halogen-free (LSHF) or plenum-rated for indoor use .
  • Strength Members: Kevlar (aramid yarn) is commonly used under the jacket for tensile strength and durability .
  • Diameter: Typically 2.0mm or 3.0mm for standard patch cords .

Performance Specifications

  • Insertion Loss: Standard ≤0.25 dB; low-loss ≤0.15 dB for both single-mode and multimode .
  • Return Loss: Multimode >26 dB; single-mode UPC >50 dB; single-mode APC ≥60 dB .
  • Tensile Strength: Minimum 50 N per IEC 61300-2-4 .
  • Durability: Connector mating cycles >500 for both single-mode and multimode .

Lengths and Configurations

Patch cords are available in 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 meters, and can be custom-ordered up to 99 meters . They come in simplex (single fiber) or duplex (paired fibers) configurations, with color-coded jackets for easy identification .

Applications

Typical applications include:

  • Data centers: Intra-rack and inter-rack connections, server uplinks, and horizontal patching .
  • Telecom networks: FTTx, CATV, and backbone interconnections .
  • Test and measurement: Connecting OTDRs, power meters, and light sources during commissioning .

Standards Compliance

Fiber optic patch cords are manufactured and tested to meet TIA-604 (FOCIS), IEC 61754, YD/T, and ANSI/TIA-568.3-E standards . Factory testing ensures consistent insertion loss, return loss, and end-face quality for reliable network performance . In summary, a typical fiber optic patch cord combines standardized fiber types, high-quality connectors, durable jackets, and tested optical performance to ensure reliable, high-speed interconnections in structured cabling and telecom networks.
