Rebuilding an optical distribution box involves carefully removing, organizing, and reconnecting fiber optic cables while ensuring proper protection, routing, and splice management.

Step 1: Prepare the Box and Tools

Before starting, ensure you have the necessary tools: fiber strippers, cleavers, fusion splicer, cable ties, grommets, and protective tubes. Inspect the distribution box for any damaged components, such as splice trays, adapters, or protective elements, and replace them if needed .

Step 2: Remove Existing Fibers

  • Carefully open the box and pull out the front panel or drawer if applicable.
  • Gently remove existing fibers from the splice trays and adapters, taking care not to bend or break the fibers.
  • Label each fiber or pigtail to maintain proper identification for reconnection .

Step 3: Prepare Fiber Cables

  • Strip the outer and inner jackets of the fiber cables using proper stripping tools.
  • Clean the fibers and remove any filling compounds.
  • Wrap insulation tape around the stripped area to protect the fiber .
  • Insert the fibers into protective tubes or sleeves to prevent damage during handling.

Step 4: Install or Reorganize Splice Trays

  • Place the splice trays back into the box, ensuring they are securely fixed.
  • Route the fibers into the trays, maintaining a minimum bend radius (typically >40mm) to prevent signal loss or breakage .
  • Use cable ties or movable clips to secure fibers along the routing paths, avoiding tension on the fibers when the drawer or panel is pulled out .

Step 5: Connect Adapters and Splitters

  • Plug pigtail connectors into the appropriate adapters.
  • If using PLC or FBT splitters, mount them on the designated splitter panel and secure them with nylon ties or clamps .
  • Coil excess fiber neatly in the splice tray, ensuring no sharp bends or kinks.

Step 6: Introduce Feeder and Drop Cables

  • Feed the main (feeder) cable through the center port and drop cables through side ports, using grommets to secure them .
  • Fix the steel core and fiber in the fiber fixing board to prevent movement.
  • Ensure the fiber length allows full extension of the drawer or panel without tension .

Step 7: Final Checks

  • Verify all fibers are properly routed, secured, and labeled.
  • Close the box and ensure the front panel or drawer moves smoothly.
  • Test the fiber connections for continuity and signal integrity before putting the box back into service . Rebuilding an optical distribution box requires patience and careful handling of fragile fibers. Following these steps ensures organized, protected, and functional fiber connections, reducing the risk of damage and signal loss.
