Intrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors

Mechanism: The optical fiber itself acts as the sensing element. Environmental changes such as strain, temperature, or pressure directly modulate the light traveling through the fiber, affecting its intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength . Advantages:

  • Can provide distributed sensing over long distances.
  • High sensitivity and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI).
  • Compact and suitable for harsh environments. Limitations:
  • Sensitive to fiber losses due to splices, bends, or connectors.
  • Requires careful calibration for accurate measurements. Applications: Structural health monitoring, temperature and strain measurement, and industrial process monitoring .

Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors

Mechanism: The fiber serves primarily as a light transmission medium. The sensing occurs outside the fiber in an external transducer or "black box," which modulates the light based on the measured parameter . Advantages:

  • Can measure parameters in inaccessible or harsh locations.
  • Strong immunity to EMI and electrical hazards.
  • Non-contact sensing is possible, enhancing safety. Limitations:
  • Typically point sensors, not suitable for distributed measurements.
  • More complex setup due to external transducers. Applications: Measuring internal temperatures of jet engines, power transformers, and other high-voltage or high-temperature environments .

Hybrid Fiber Optic Sensors

Mechanism: Combine features of intrinsic and extrinsic sensors. The fiber carries light into and out of the sensing element, allowing partial modulation within the fiber and partial modulation externally . Advantages:

  • Flexible design for specialized applications.
  • Can leverage benefits of both intrinsic and extrinsic sensing. Limitations:
  • More complex design and potentially higher cost. Applications: Custom industrial monitoring systems where both distributed sensing and remote transduction are required .
