Distribution box current transformer

Current transformers (CTs) in distribution boxes safely measure high currents and provide signals for metering and protection devices.

Purpose of Current Transformers in Distribution Boxes

Current transformers are installed in distribution boxes to sense high currents from busbars or cables and convert them into smaller, proportional currents that can be safely measured by instruments or used for relay protection. This allows accurate monitoring of electrical systems without directly exposing meters or protective devices to high currents, ensuring both safety and precision in power distribution management .

Number and Configuration of CTs

  • Single CT: Used for measuring current from a single line, extending the range of single-phase meters, measuring single-phase current, or sampling for reactive power controllers. In balanced three-phase systems, one CT may suffice since the phase currents are nearly equal .
  • Two CTs: Can be installed on the same phase busbar (similar to a single CT) or on two different phase busbars to measure three-phase currents in balanced or unbalanced systems. The third phase current can be calculated from the other two .
  • Three CTs: Typically used to measure all three phases in three-phase systems, enabling monitoring, protection, and accurate energy measurement. They can be connected to mutual induction meters or thermal relays to expand measurement range and improve system safety .

Installation Guidelines

  • Location: CTs are usually installed inside the distribution box near the power inlet for convenient access and maintenance, while maintaining safe distances from other components to avoid interference .
  • Orientation: The primary side terminals (L1 and L2) connect to the power inlet and load side, while the secondary terminals (K1 and K2) connect to measuring instruments or protective devices, with proper grounding to ensure correct current direction and measurement accuracy .
  • Mounting: CTs should be firmly fixed using brackets or fixtures to prevent loosening due to vibration, which could affect performance and safety .

Applications

  • Metering: CTs provide current signals to ammeters or energy meters for accurate measurement of single-phase or three-phase currents.
  • Protection: They supply current information to protective relays, thermal relays, or reactive power controllers to detect overloads, faults, or unbalanced conditions.
  • Monitoring: CTs enable continuous monitoring of current magnitude and phase, supporting energy management and system stability . In summary, current transformers in distribution boxes are essential for safe, accurate measurement and protection of electrical systems, with their number and configuration tailored to the system type and monitoring requirements. Proper installation and connection are critical to ensure reliable operation and safety.
