Removing labels from optical modules

Labels on optical modules should be removed or replaced carefully to avoid damage and maintain accurate identification.

Safety and Preparation

Before handling optical modules, ensure ESD protection by wearing a grounded wrist strap or ESD gloves, and work on an antistatic surface . Always disconnect optical fibers and cover ports with dust caps to prevent contamination or damage . Avoid touching the optical window or connector surfaces, as fingerprints or scratches can impair module performance .

Removing Labels

  1. Check the label type: Some modules have adhesive labels, while others may have protective films over the label or module surface .
  2. Peel carefully: Gently lift the edge of the label or film using a fingernail or plastic tool. Avoid using metal tools that could scratch the module .
  3. Avoid residue: If adhesive residue remains, use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface. Do not let liquid seep into the module or optical window .
  4. Do not touch the optical window: Always handle the module by the sides or label area, keeping the optical window free from contact .

Replacing Labels

  • Ensure the new label is clear, accurate, and matches the fiber or port information .
  • Use non-abrasive, adhesive labels designed for electronics to prevent residue or peeling.
  • Record the location of each fiber and module before replacing labels to maintain proper identification .

Additional Tips

  • If the module has a protective film over the label, remove it only when ready to install the module .
  • Store removed modules in their original packaging with dust caps to prevent contamination .
  • Perform a background calibration or system check after reinstalling modules to ensure proper operation . By following these steps, you can safely remove and replace labels on optical modules without compromising their performance or identification accuracy.
