Single-mode fiber supports long-distance transmission up to hundreds of kilometers, while multimode fiber is typically limited to short distances under 2 km, with actual distances determined by fiber type, wavelength, and network equipment.

Fiber Types and Standard Distances

Single-mode fiber (SMF) uses a single light path, minimizing modal dispersion and allowing transmission over very long distances. Standard SMF types include OS1 and OS2:

  • OS1: Indoor use, up to 2 km
  • OS2: Outdoor/long-haul, can exceed 40 km without amplification, and with optical amplifiers, distances can reach hundreds or even thousands of kilometers, such as in submarine cables . Multimode fiber (MMF) supports multiple light paths, which increases modal dispersion and limits distance. Common MMF types include OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4:

  2. Dispersion: Spreading of light pulses over distance, including chromatic, modal, and polarization mode dispersion. SMF is mainly affected by chromatic and PMD, while MMF is limited by modal dispersion .
  3. Optical Power Budget: The difference between transmitter output and receiver sensitivity, accounting for fiber loss and connector/splice losses. Higher power and sensitive receivers extend distance .
  4. Amplification and Regeneration: Optical amplifiers (e.g., EDFAs) boost signals without electrical conversion, extending SMF distances. Regeneration converts optical signals to electrical, amplifies, and retransmits, used for extremely long links .

Transmission distances are typically defined by TIA/EIA and ISO/IEC standards:

  • TIA-568: Defines multimode fiber types (OM1–OM4) and single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2) performance
  • ISO/IEC 11801: International standard for generic cabling, specifying fiber types, bandwidth, and maximum distances for different applications
  • ITU-T G.652/G.655: Defines single-mode fiber characteristics for long-haul and metropolitan networks

Practical Implications

  • Data centers: Use OM3/OM4 multimode fiber for short, high-bandwidth links
  • Campus or metropolitan networks: Use OS1/OS2 single-mode fiber for distances up to tens of kilometers
