A 288-core optical cable typically consists of multiple loose tubes containing fibers, a central strength member, water-blocking layers, corrugated steel tape armoring, and an outer protective jacket.

Core and Tube Arrangement

A 288-core optical cable is usually organized into 12 to 24 loose tubes, each containing 12 fibers (for multimode) or 12 fibers per ribbon (for singlemode ribbonized cables), depending on the design . The loose tubes are filled with a fiber jelly compound to protect fibers from moisture and mechanical stress . These tubes are stranded around a central strength member (CSM), which provides tensile strength and maintains cable integrity during installation .

Strength and Armoring

The central strength member is typically made of steel or FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) to provide mechanical support. Surrounding the loose tubes, water-blocking glass yarns or tapes are applied to prevent water ingress . For enhanced protection, especially in outdoor or direct burial applications, a corrugated steel tape (CST) armor is wrapped around the cable, offering rodent resistance and mechanical durability .

Outer Jacket

The cable is finished with an outer jacket made of materials such as PE (polyethylene), LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), or flame-retardant compounds, suitable for indoor, outdoor, or riser installations . The jacket protects the internal fibers from environmental hazards, UV exposure, and physical damage.

Fiber Type and Color Coding

  • Multimode (MM OM2/OM3/OM4) or singlemode (OS2, G.652.D) fibers are used depending on the application .
  • Fibers are color-coded according to TIA/EIA standards for easy identification during splicing and termination, often using a 12-color cycle repeated across tubes .

Ribbonized Variants

Some 288-core cables, especially for data center distribution, use ribbonized fibers where 12 fibers are bonded into a ribbon. Each ribbon is placed in a sub-unit tube, allowing mass fusion splicing and easier handling . The ribbons are flexible and compact, opening naturally when the outer jacket is removed.

These cables are designed for high-density backbone networks, including industrial, telecom, campus, and data center environments. They are suitable for duct, tunnel, direct burial, and indoor/outdoor installations, providing high fiber count in a compact, mechanically robust design .
