A 288-core optical cable is usually organized into 12 to 24 loose tubes, each containing 12 fibers (for multimode) or 12 fibers per ribbon (for singlemode ribbonized cables), depending on the design . The jacket protects the internal fibers from environmental hazards, UV exposure, and physical damage.
Some 288-core cables, especially for data center distribution, use ribbonized fibers where 12 fibers are bonded into a ribbon. Each ribbon is placed in a sub-unit tube, allowing mass fusion splicing and easier handling . The ribbons are flexible and compact, opening naturally when the outer jacket is removed.
