Grounding into the distribution box

Proper grounding of a distribution box ensures safety, prevents electrical shock, and maintains system reliability by connecting all metallic parts and components to a low-resistance earth path.

Key Grounding Principles

  1. Grounding the Box and Components Every distribution box and its internal electrical components must be grounded. The metal enclosure, doors, and any metallic parts that could become live in a fault must be bonded to the grounding system using dedicated copper wires or braided conductors . This prevents static buildup and ensures fault currents safely flow to earth.
  2. Grounding Points and Connections
    • Locate the grounding bar (PE bar) inside the box, marked for grounding connections .
    • Connect the main power ground wire directly to the PE bar using a copper core wire. Strip the wire appropriately and tighten the terminal screw to ensure a firm connection .
    • Connect all electrical components that require grounding to the PE bar using copper wires .
    • The metal box itself should be connected to the PE bus via a box grounding bolt or equivalent, ensuring the enclosure is electrically bonded .
    • Any metal conduit or threaded pipes connected to the box should also be electrically bonded to the enclosure, either by welding or using conductive connectors .
  3. Wire Specifications
    • In the US, use a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground wire for the main connection; in other markets, a 6 mm² wire is standard .
    • For connections between mounting plates and components like spindle plates, larger wires may be required (e.g., 16 mm² or 6 AWG) to maintain low resistance, especially for long cable runs .
    • Use yellow-green insulated copper wires for easy identification and safety .
  4. Resistance Requirements
    • The total ground resistance between all system parts should be less than 0.1 Ohm for high-reliability applications .
    • For general installations, ensure the grounding system has a resistance of 25 Ohms or less, testing each rod or connection to verify compliance .
  5. Grounding the Door
    • Even if the cabinet body is grounded, metal doors must also be bonded to the PE bus using a dedicated grounding screw or clip .
    • This prevents shock hazards from accidental contact with live wires or static discharge.
  6. Precautions and Maintenance
    • Ensure all connections are tight, corrosion-free, and clearly marked for inspection .
    • Avoid double-tapping neutrals or using bolts not rated for grounding.
    • Regularly test the grounding system to confirm low resistance and integrity. By following these steps, the distribution box and all associated components will be safely grounded, compliant with electrical standards, and protected against electrical faults and static hazards.
