The FC (Ferrule Connector) is a threaded fiber optic connector designed for high-precision, high-vibration environments, commonly used with single-mode and polarization-maintaining fibers.

Overview

The FC connector features a threaded coupling mechanism that ensures a secure connection, preventing accidental disconnection in environments with vibration or movement, such as industrial, railway, or aviation systems . Originally developed by NTT in the late 1970s as the "Field-Assembly Connector," it was the first connector to use a ceramic ferrule, typically 2.5 mm in diameter, to hold the fiber end . The ferrule is polished to create a physical contact (PC) surface, allowing the fiber cores to touch directly, minimizing insertion loss and back-reflection .

Types and Polishing

FC connectors come in several polish types:

  • FC/PC (Physical Contact): Standard polish for low insertion loss.
  • FC/SPC (Super Physical Contact): Higher polish quality for reduced back-reflection.
  • FC/UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Ultra-polished for minimal insertion loss and reflection.
  • FC/APC (Angled Physical Contact): The ferrule end is polished at an 8° angle to prevent reflected light from traveling back up the fiber, achieving return losses up to 60 dB .

FC connectors are widely used in:

  • High-vibration industrial or maritime environments They are particularly effective in applications requiring stable, low-loss connections and are compatible with single-mode and polarization-maintaining fibers. However, due to their screw-on design, they are less suitable for high-density patch panels and have been gradually replaced by LC and SC connectors in modern data centers .

Practical Considerations

  • Insertion Loss: Typically low (<0.5 dB) when properly mated.
  • Return Loss: Varies by polish type; FC/APC offers the highest performance.
  • Compatibility: FC connectors should be mated with the same type (PC with PC, APC with APC) to avoid significant loss .
