Grounding Method for Household Electrical Distribution Box

A household electrical distribution box must be grounded to a proper grounding electrode system, with all metal parts bonded and the neutral connected to ground only at the main service panel.

Main Grounding Components

  1. Grounding Electrode System: The panel must connect to a grounding electrode, which can include:
    • Ground rods: Typically copper-clad steel rods, 8 feet long, driven into the earth near the home's foundation .
    • Metal underground water pipes: Must be continuously buried for at least 10 feet to serve as a grounding electrode .
    • Concrete-encased electrodes: Rebar or copper wire encased in the foundation footing . The grounding electrode conductor (GEC) connects the panel to these electrodes and must be sized according to the service entrance conductors, often 6 AWG copper for short runs and 4 AWG for longer runs .
  2. Main Bonding Jumper (MBJ): Inside the main service panel, the MBJ connects the neutral bus bar to the equipment grounding bus bar. This is the only point where neutral and ground are bonded, ensuring a single reference to earth and preventing objectionable neutral currents on metal parts .
  3. Equipment Grounding Conductors (EGC): All metal enclosures, junction boxes, and non-current-carrying conductive parts must be bonded to the grounding system. This ensures that any fault current has a low-resistance path back to the source, allowing breakers to trip quickly .

Installation Guidelines

  • Continuous Conductor: The GEC must be a continuous run from the panel to the grounding electrode, securely fastened to the grounding bus bar .
  • Bonding Metal Parts: All metal boxes and enclosures in the branch circuits must be bonded. Non-metallic boxes do not require bonding, but the branch circuit ground wire must extend to any device installed in them .
  • Neutral Isolation: The neutral conductor should not contact the ground anywhere except at the main service panel. This prevents dangerous neutral currents on conductive surfaces .
  • Multiple Electrodes: Some jurisdictions require two ground rods spaced at least 6 feet apart, or a combination of rods and water pipes .

Proper grounding stabilizes the electrical system, provides a reference point for voltage, and safely dissipates stray electricity from faults or surges, including lightning strikes .
