Configure and Verify Ethernet 10/100/1000Mb Half/Full Duplex
This document describes how to determine why a port or interface experiences problems.
Ensure that the optical transceivers installed on both ends of the link are qualified for the switch model and OS version. Third-party or unqualified optics may not work reliably or at all, even if they appear physically compatible. Dell and other vendors provide lists of supported transceivers for each switch model, and verifying this is a critical first step (Dell Networking PowerSwitch Layer 1 troubleshooting) .
Auto-negotiation must be enabled on both ends of the link or disabled on both ends. Mismatched settings, such as one side set to auto and the other manually configured, can prevent the link from coming up. For example, a server set to 10G with auto-negotiation off requires the switch port to match this configuration . On electrical interfaces, mismatched half/full duplex can also cause negotiation failures .
For high-speed interfaces (25G, 50G, 100G), FEC settings must match across the link. Most switches default to auto FEC, which usually works, but in some cases, you may need to manually set FEC to FC (Firecode), RS (Reed-Solomon), or none, depending on the connected device's capabilities . Mismatched FEC can prevent the link from establishing.
Sometimes, the interface may require a shutdown and re-enable cycle to reinitialize negotiation. On Huawei switches, for example, running shutdown followed by undo shutdown can bring the remote interface up after a fiber re-insertion .
