Slovakia has commissioned a 4-core polarization-maintaining (PM) optical fiber optimized for high-precision applications such as fiber optic gyroscopes.

Slovakia's new 4-core PM fiber is designed to preserve the polarization state of light across multiple cores, minimizing cross-coupling and maintaining signal integrity even under bending or temperature variations . This fiber incorporates stress-induced birefringence, typically achieved using stress rods or asymmetric cladding, which ensures that linearly polarized light launched into the fiber remains in a defined polarization state throughout propagation .

Design and Technology

The fiber likely uses PANDA or bow-tie configurations, where stress rods made of a different glass composition are embedded parallel to the core. These rods create anisotropic stress, producing high birefringence and separating the two orthogonal polarization modes .
