How to test values ​​in multimode fiber optic cables

Testing multimode fiber optic cables involves verifying continuity, measuring signal loss, and locating faults using methods like visual inspection, light source and power meter testing, and OTDR analysis.

Basic Continuity Testing

The simplest way to test a multimode fiber is using a visible light source or flashlight. Connect the light source to one end of the fiber and observe the opposite end. If light is visible, the fiber is continuous and properly installed. This method is quick and effective for detecting breaks or major faults, but it does not measure signal loss or performance quality, and care must be taken not to look directly into the fiber as laser light can damage the eyes .

Power Meter and Light Source Testing

For more accurate testing, use a light source and power meter (also called an Optical Loss Test Set, OLTS). This method measures end-to-end attenuation of the fiber, which is critical for ensuring the cable meets network performance standards. Connect the light source to one end and the power meter to the other, then record the signal loss. Compare the results to industry standards such as TIA/EIA-568 to verify that the fiber is within acceptable loss limits .

Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) Testing

An OTDR is an advanced tool that sends pulses of light through the fiber and analyzes reflections to detect splices, bends, breaks, and connector losses. OTDR testing is especially useful for long multimode cables or outside plant installations with multiple splices. It provides a detailed trace of the fiber, allowing technicians to locate faults precisely and verify individual splice quality .

Visual Fault Locators (VFL)

A VFL uses a visible red laser to identify breaks, tight bends, or faulty connectors. It is often used in combination with other testing methods to quickly locate physical faults in the fiber .

Inspection of Connectors

Fiber inspection probes or microscopes are used to magnify the end face of connectors to check for dirt, debris, or damage, which can significantly affect performance. Cleaning and inspecting connectors is a critical step before performing any optical measurements .

Recommended Testing Procedure

  1. Inspect connectors for cleanliness and damage.
  2. Perform continuity check with a flashlight or VFL.
  3. Measure end-to-end attenuation using a light source and power meter (OLTS).
  4. Use OTDR for long cables or complex installations to verify splices and locate faults.
