Wiring of the main circuit of the distribution box

A distribution box safely distributes electricity from the main supply to multiple circuits using a main switch, MCBs, RCCB, neutral and earth links.

Key Components

  • Main MCB (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch controlling the entire supply. Typically rated 63A for domestic installations. The incoming phase and neutral wires are connected here .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents, electrical shocks, and insulation faults. Usually rated 30mA for single-phase domestic systems .
  • Single-Pole MCBs: Protect individual circuits or loads. Double-pole MCBs may be used for special high-power loads .
  • Neutral Link: Distributes neutral to all output circuits.
  • Earth Link: Connects the earthing of the supply and all loads for safety .

Wiring Procedure

  1. Safety First: Ensure the main power supply is turned off before starting any connections .
  2. Mounting the Box: Secure the distribution box at an accessible height on a wall, free from obstructions .
  3. Incoming Supply Connection: Connect the live (phase) and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB .
  4. RCCB Connection: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. The output of the RCCB then feeds the individual MCBs .
  5. Circuit Breaker Wiring: Install single-pole MCBs in their slots and connect each outgoing circuit wire to its corresponding breaker. Ensure wires are correctly marked for identification .
  6. Neutral and Earth Connections: Connect all neutral wires from the loads to the neutral link and all earth wires to the earth link .
  7. Verification: Use a multimeter to check for proper connections, continuity, and absence of short circuits before switching on the main supply .

Tips for Safe Installation

  • Avoid overloading circuits; ensure the total load does not exceed the distribution box capacity .
  • Double-check all connections for tightness to prevent loose contacts .
  • Insulate all exposed wires properly to prevent short circuits or electric shocks .
  • Label each MCB according to the circuit it controls for easy identification and maintenance . By following this wiring layout and procedure, a distribution box can safely manage electricity distribution, protect circuits, and ensure compliance with safety standards .
