How to use ceramic ferrules to fix optical fibers

To fix a ceramic ferrule to an optical fiber, the fiber is typically epoxied into the ferrule, then trimmed and polished to ensure precise alignment and minimal signal loss.

Step 1: Select the Correct Ferrule

Choose a ceramic ferrule with a bore diameter slightly larger than the fiber cladding to allow insertion while maintaining tight alignment. For a standard 125 µm fiber, ferrule bores typically range from 124 µm to 127 µm to accommodate manufacturing tolerances and ensure proper centering of the fiber core . Singlemode fibers require the highest precision due to their small 9 µm core.

Step 2: Prepare the Fiber

Strip the fiber coating carefully without damaging the glass core. Clean the bare fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove any debris or oils. Ensure the fiber end is straight and free of chips.

Step 6: Polish the Ferrule Endface

Polish the fiber and ferrule endface together using progressively finer polishing films or pads. The goal is a smooth, flat, and clean surface that aligns the fiber core precisely with the ferrule bore . Proper polishing minimizes insertion loss and back reflection.

Step 7: Inspect and Test

Use a fiber inspection microscope to check for scratches, chips, or misalignment. Test the optical performance to ensure low insertion loss and high return loss. Adjust polishing if necessary.
