Fiber optic cables and cores are identified using standardized color codes (TIA/EIA-598-C) for jackets, buffer tubes, and individual fibers, enabling accurate tracing, splicing, and connector matching.

Fiber Cable Identification

Outer Jacket Color: The first visual cue for identifying fiber type is the cable jacket color. Standard colors indicate fiber mode and performance:

  • Yellow: Single-mode (OS2)
  • Orange: Multimode OM1/OM2
  • Aqua: Multimode OM3/OM4
  • Emerald Green: OM5 wideband multimode
  • Black: Typically outdoor cables; always check printed legends for fiber type . Connector Color: Fiber connectors also follow color conventions to indicate polish type and mode:
  • Green boot: APC (angled) connector
  • Blue boot: UPC (flat) connector
  • Beige or Aqua: Multimode connectors .

12-Color Sequence: Individual fibers inside multi-fiber cables are color-coded in a repeating 12-color sequence for easy identification:
