Duct Preparation

Before installing fiber optic cables, inspect the duct for blockages, debris, or collapsed sections and clean it using a duct brush if necessary. Ensure the duct material (PVC, HDPE, steel, concrete, or FRP) is suitable for the environment and provides adequate protection against mechanical stress, moisture, and chemical exposure . Proper duct preparation ensures smooth cable movement and reduces the risk of fiber damage.

Installation Methods

Pulling Method

  • Manual Pulling: Suitable for short runs (≤500 meters). A pull rope or duct rodder is threaded through the duct, attached to the cable's strength members (e.g., aramid yarn or steel wires), and pulled steadily to avoid stressing the fibers .
  • Mechanical Pulling: Used for longer runs. Machines maintain a controlled pulling speed (typically 1–3 meters per second) and monitor tension to prevent exceeding the cable's maximum rated load, which is often up to 600 pounds-force (2,670 N) for standard loose-tube cables .
  • Precautions: Never pull on the cable jacket alone. Use break-away swivels to prevent twisting, and apply approved lubricants to reduce friction . Maintain the minimum bend radius (usually 20 times the cable diameter during installation) to avoid microbends or fiber breakage.

Air Blowing Method

  • High-Speed Air Injection: Compressed air propels the cable through the duct, often combined with a mechanical push. This method is effective for long distances, up to several kilometers, and reduces mechanical stress on the cable .
  • Advantages: Minimizes pulling tension, allows installation in microducts, and is suitable for complex duct paths with multiple bends.

Cable Handling and Protection

  • Use strength members to bear the pulling force, protecting the optical fibers inside.
  • Avoid excessive bending, crushing, or coiling beyond recommended limits. For long cable lengths, use figure-eight coiling with loops 1.5–2.5 meters in diameter to relieve torsion .
  • Protect cable ends with caps or tape to prevent moisture ingress during installation .
  • Avoid detergents as lubricants; use only manufacturer-approved cable lubricants for polyethylene jackets .

Post-Installation

  • Secure the cable at both ends using brackets or cable management systems.
  • Test for signal loss and continuity to ensure installation integrity.
  • Document the installed route and any tension or bend radius measurements for future maintenance. By following these practices, fiber optic cables can be safely and efficiently installed in ducts, ensuring long-term performance and minimizing the risk of damage during deployment .
