Adhesive application in fiber optics involves selecting the right adhesive, precise insertion of the fiber into the connector ferrule, and controlled curing to ensure a strong, low-loss connection.

Types of Adhesives

Fiber optic applications commonly use three main adhesive types: epoxy, hot melt, and anaerobic adhesives. Epoxy is widely used for its strong mechanical bond and chemical resistance, while UV-curable adhesives allow rapid curing and minimal handling time. Hot melt adhesives provide quick setting, and anaerobic adhesives require careful cleaving and polishing due to their lower yield in terminations .

Application Techniques

Several methods are used to apply adhesive to fiber optic cables:

  1. Inject and Insert: Inject adhesive into the connector ferrule, then insert the prepared fiber end. This method is straightforward and allows the adhesive to cure naturally, typically in 4–5 minutes for epoxy, resulting in a strong bond .
  2. Inject with Accelerator: Inject adhesive into the connector and dip the fiber end into a chemical accelerator before insertion. The adhesive sets almost instantly (around 30 seconds), which is useful for rapid terminations but requires quick handling to avoid premature curing .
  3. Spray or Drop Accelerator: After inserting the fiber into the adhesive-filled ferrule, spray or drop the accelerator onto the protruding fiber and move it back and forth to distribute the accelerator inside the ferrule. This also achieves rapid curing .
  4. Wipe and Insert: Wipe the fiber with adhesive and insert it into the connector. Without an accelerator, the adhesive cures more slowly, providing a stronger and more controlled bond .

  • Use the correct adhesive for the substrate and application, considering optical clarity, low shrinkage, and environmental stability .
  • Control adhesive volume to avoid excess that can interfere with optical performance.
  • Curing method: UV-curable adhesives allow fast setting, while two-part epoxies may require precise mixing and controlled curing conditions to ensure reliability .
  • Inspection: After curing, inspect the fiber end under a microscope to ensure proper alignment and polish, avoiding over-polishing which can increase signal loss .
  • Equipment: Use proper dispensing tools such as syringes, tips, and barrels to ensure accurate adhesive application and minimize waste . By following these methods and best practices, fiber optic cables can be terminated or bonded with high mechanical strength, low optical loss, and long-term reliability.
