Voltage protection relays are essential devices in electrical systems that monitor voltage levels and respond to deviations beyond preset limits. They detect overvoltage (voltage exceeding the maximum safe level) and undervoltage (voltage dropping below the minimum safe level) conditions, sending a trip signal to circuit breakers to isolate the affected section and prevent damage to equipment or safety hazards ( ). These relays are more sensitive than circuit breakers alone, allowing faster and more precise protection.
Voltage relays operate using a wire coil and electromagnetic mechanism. When voltage passes through the coil, it generates a magnetic field. If the voltage deviates from the preset range, the relay activates, sending a signal to the breaker to disconnect the circuit. After a set time, the relay can reset, allowing normal operation to resume ( ). Modern relays can handle single-phase, three-phase, AC, and DC systems, and some advanced models can assess the severity of voltage deviations before initiating a shutdown.
Voltage relays are often part of a broader transmission line protection scheme, which includes distance relays, differential relays, directional overcurrent relays, and pilot relays. These relays work together to ensure selectivity, sensitivity, speed, and reliability, isolating only the faulted section while maintaining system stability ( ). Proper coordination with current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (PTs), and circuit breakers is critical for effective protection ( ).
