Huawei Network Rack Configuration

Huawei network rack configuration involves careful planning of physical and logical racks, host allocation, and adherence to naming conventions to ensure cluster stability and efficient network operations.

Physical and Logical Rack Setup

Huawei distinguishes between physical racks (the actual hardware location) and logical racks (the representation in FusionInsight Manager) to manage hosts effectively . Logical racks help balance loads across CPU, memory, disk, and network resources, improving cluster reliability and stability.

Key Policies for Rack Configuration

  1. Balanced Host Distribution: Each logical rack should have nearly the same number of hosts.
  2. Consistency with Physical Racks: Logical rack names should reflect the physical rack they represent.
  3. Combining Small Racks: Physical racks with few hosts can be combined into a single logical rack.
  4. Splitting Large Racks: Physical racks with many hosts should be divided into multiple logical racks.
  5. Default Values: Set default or consistent values for logical racks on the first layer.
  6. Minimum Hosts: Each rack should contain at least three hosts to maintain cluster performance .

Rack Naming Conventions

  • Use hierarchical names based on network topology: /level1/level2/...
  • Names must contain at least one level, cannot be empty, and can include letters, digits, and underscores (_)
  • Maximum length: 200 characters
  • Example: /default/rack0
  • For hosts with DataNode instances, ensure all DataNode hosts share the same rack name levels to avoid configuration failures .

Host Allocation

  • Log in to FusionInsight Manager
  • Navigate to Hosts, select the target host, and choose Set Rack from the More drop-down
  • Assign rack names according to the hierarchy and topology
  • Avoid placing hosts from different equipment rooms in the same logical rack to prevent performance issues .

Rack Planning Tools

Huawei recommends using rack planning software to visualize and document your network setup. Tools like PATCHBOX Rack Planner allow you to:

  • Set rack units (6–52)
  • Add switches, servers, patch panels, and cabling management solutions
  • Export or share rack diagrams for team collaboration .

Small Data Center Solutions

For compact deployments, Huawei's FusionModule500 integrates UPS, cooling, and power systems in a modular rack, enabling efficient operations in branch offices or small data centers .

Best Practices

  • Plan racks according to network topology and host roles
  • Maintain consistent naming and hierarchy
  • Ensure load balancing across racks to prevent bottlenecks
  • Use rack planning tools to visualize and document configurations before deployment By following these guidelines, Huawei network racks can be configured efficiently, ensuring high performance, reliability, and maintainability in enterprise or data center environments.
