Yellow Cable Tray Installation Method

Yellow cable trays should be installed with proper planning, secure mounting, and continuous grounding to ensure safety and compliance.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review the approved shop drawings to determine the layout, length, and location of the cable trays. Inspect all materials for damage or discrepancies and ensure they match the approved specifications. Store trays horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports to prevent deformation and protect from moisture and sunlight during storage .

Mounting Vertical and Horizontal Trays

  1. Vertical Trays: Start on the far left of the planned installation. Mount the tray along the entire length of the cover, leaving a gap of about 300mm from the top and bottom. Secure it to the counter-lath using screws spaced 150–200mm apart .
  2. Horizontal Trays: Install horizontal trays every fourth patch under junction boxes. Fix them with 4x30mm screws at 150–200mm spacing, leaving approximately 200mm clearance from the far right side .

Electrical Continuity and Grounding

  • Connect all horizontal trays to the vertical ground wire to ensure electrical continuity.
  • Use connectors at tray junctions to maintain a continuous grounding path.
  • Attach a 16mm² yellow-green ground cable to each tray and route it along with other system cables .
  • Verify that all trays are electrically connected and free of sharp edges that could damage wires.

Safety and Quality Checks

  • Inspect the stability of all fixings and correct spacing between screws.
  • Confirm electrical continuity between trays and proper grounding connections.
  • Ensure there are no sharp edges or defects that could compromise cable integrity .
  • Maintain proper clearance and alignment to facilitate safe cable routing and future maintenance.

Additional Considerations

  • Use the correct tray type (ladder, perforated, or solid-bottom) based on load, airflow, and environmental conditions .
  • Space supports appropriately, typically 1.5–3 meters apart, depending on tray type and load .
  • Coordinate with other trades to prevent interference and ensure compliance with approved designs . Following these steps ensures that yellow cable trays are installed safely, maintain electrical continuity, and provide a durable, compliant cable management system.
