Properly coiling cables in a fiber optic terminal box ensures minimal signal loss, protects fibers from damage, and keeps the installation tidy for future maintenance.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prepare the Cable and Terminal Box

  • Place the terminal box in its intended installation location and measure the required cable length.
  • Strip the cable to expose the fibers, leaving at least 0.5 meters of buffer for easy handling and splicing .
  • Pass the stripped cable into the splice tray from the designated entry point, usually the upper side . 2. Secure the Cable
  • Fix the cable's strength member to the designated clamp or fixing part inside the box to stabilize it .
  • Ensure the cable is held firmly to prevent movement that could stress the fibers. 3. Splice the Fibers
  • Splice each fiber to its corresponding pigtail using fusion splicing or mechanical splicing.
  • Place the splice sleeves in the tray to protect the joints . 4. Coil the Fibers Properly
  • Coil each fiber individually in the splice tray, maintaining a gentle bend radius to avoid microbends or signal loss .
  • Avoid overlapping or tangling fibers (“bird's-nest” coiling).
  • Common methods include:
    • Middle-first method: Place the heat-shrink sleeves in the center of the tray first, then coil fibers on both sides.
    • End-first method: Start coiling from one end, fix the heat-shrink tube, and then coil the remaining fiber on the other side .
  • For special cases, such as unusually long or short fibers, coil them separately at the tray ends . 5. Connect or Protect the Pigtails
  • Connect the pigtails to the appropriate connectors.
  • If not connecting immediately, use dust caps to protect the connectors . 6. Finalize Installation
  • Ensure all fibers are neatly coiled, with no sharp bends or twists.
  • Close the terminal box after performing basic light tests or measuring all fibers .
