To connect a power monitoring system to a distribution box, you must correctly wire the current transformers (CTs) and voltage inputs, ensure proper orientation, and establish communication with the monitoring device.

Step 1: Safety First

Before starting, de-energize the distribution box unless using clamp-on CTs for temporary monitoring. Always follow NFPA 70E standards, wear arc-rated PPE, and verify the incident energy level of the panel . If unsure, consult a qualified electrician.

Step 2: Mounting the Monitoring Module

  • Install the monitoring module in a small enclosure near the distribution box or on a side wall .
  • Ensure the enclosure allows access for CT cables, voltage taps, and communication wiring.
  • For wired systems, use a NEMA 6x9 enclosure with an RJ-45 connector for Ethernet connectivity if required .

Step 3: Connecting Current Transformers (CTs)

  • Identify the L1, L2, and L3 phases in the distribution box.
  • Connect the CTs to the monitoring module according to the manufacturer's instructions: for example, L1 to S1, L2 to S2, and leave S3 empty if not using three-phase monitoring .
  • Align the CT arrow with the direction of current flow from the grid to the load to ensure accurate readings .
  • Use the correct CT cable (e.g., 6-pin Phoenix terminal) and secure connections firmly.

Step 4: Voltage Connections

  • Connect voltage inputs from the distribution box to the monitoring module, typically L1 to G1, L2 to G2, and leave G3 empty for single-phase or two-phase systems .
  • Ensure all connections are tight and insulated to prevent short circuits.

Step 5: Communication and Power

  • Connect the monitoring module to 24 VDC power using the designated power socket .
  • For networked systems, connect Ethernet cables to the RJ-45 ports or configure RS-485 for Modbus RTU devices .
  • Avoid connecting USB and Ethernet shields simultaneously to prevent grounding issues .

Step 6: System Configuration

  • Power on the monitoring module and verify the power LED is lit .
  • Use the manufacturer's software or web interface to configure the system, select the correct CT type, and bind the device to your monitoring account .
  • Test the system to ensure voltage and current readings are accurate before leaving it in operation.

Step 7: Verification

  • Check that all CTs are correctly oriented and that voltage taps match the phases.
  • Confirm that the monitoring software displays real-time data for all connected circuits .
  • Perform a functional test to ensure alarms, logging, and communication are working properly. By following these steps, your power monitoring system will be safely and accurately connected to the distribution box, providing reliable data for energy management and power quality analysis.
