Transmission Network

Malawi's transmission network is managed by the Transmission Licensee of ESCOM Limited, responsible for planning, building, maintaining, and operating the network under the Electricity Act 2016 . The network operates at 400 kV, 132 kV, and 66 kV, covering a total of 2,683 km of overhead lines, including 172.65 km at 400 kV, 1,404.82 km at 132 kV, and 1,072.81 km at 66 kV . Malawi's Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) and the National Energy Compact aim to increase electricity access from 25.9% to 70% by 2030, requiring 1.15 million additional on-grid connections and expanded off-grid solutions . The plan emphasizes technology-driven electrification, using geospatial tools for cost-effective planning and digital platforms to enhance transparency and efficiency . Off-grid solutions, including solar home systems (SHS), are supported through the Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund, transitioning into a National Energy Sector Fund to finance both off-grid and clean cooking solutions .

Malawi is actively increasing the share of renewable energy in its generation mix, targeting a total generation of 5,166 GWh by 2030, with 714 MW expected from private sector contributions .
