Connect two fiber optic cables between switches

Use compatible SFP transceivers and duplex fiber cables, ensuring proper LC connector orientation, to link the switches.

Step 1: Determine Fiber Type and Distance

First, identify whether you need single-mode (SMF) or multimode (MMF) fiber based on the distance between switches. For short distances within the same building (e.g., 100 meters), multimode OM3 or OM4 fiber is typically sufficient, while longer distances require single-mode fiber .

Step 2: Select Compatible SFP Modules

Each switch requires an SFP or SFP+ transceiver compatible with its model and the fiber type. For example, Cisco switches like the C9300 and C9200 support SFP+ modules such as GLC-SX-MM for multimode fiber or SFP-10G-LR for single-mode fiber . Ensure that both ends use the same type of SFP module to avoid incompatibility.

Step 3: Choose the Correct Fiber Cable

Use a duplex fiber optic cable with LC connectors on both ends. Duplex cables have two strands: one for transmitting (TX) and one for receiving (RX). Pre-terminated cables save time and reduce installation errors . For multimode fiber, a 50/125 OM3 LC-LC cable is standard .

Step 4: Connect the Fiber

  1. Insert the SFP modules into the fiber ports of each switch.
  2. Connect the TX of switch A to RX of switch B and RX of switch A to TX of switch B. Duplex fiber requires reversing the strands between switches to ensure proper communication .
  3. Secure the cable and avoid sharp bends to prevent signal loss.

Step 5: Verify Connectivity

After connecting, check the switch interfaces to ensure the link is up/up. Configure the ports if necessary, and test data transfer. If using multiple links, you can aggregate them for higher bandwidth.

Additional Tips

  • Label cables for easier troubleshooting.
  • Use patch panels if connecting through structured cabling.
  • Ensure SFP modules match the network speed (1G, 10G, etc.) supported by the switches .
  • For cost efficiency, multimode SFPs are cheaper for short distances, while single-mode is better for long-range connections . By following these steps, you can establish a reliable fiber optic connection between two switches, ensuring high-speed and stable network performance.
