How to install fiber optic cable reel junction boxes

Proper installation of a fiber optic cable reel in a junction box ensures reliable connectivity and prevents cable damage.

Preparation

1. Select the Location: Choose a junction box location close to the fiber transfer point, avoiding direct sunlight, moisture, or areas difficult to access for maintenance .
2. Gather Tools and Materials: Ensure you have screws, dowels, a drill, a spirit level, a screwdriver, and any mounting hardware specified by the reel manufacturer .
3. Check the Cable Reel: Remove packaging foam, shipping bolts, and any protective spacers. Lift the reel carefully using a two-person lift, holding the side plates .

Mounting the Reel

1. Secure the Reel: Attach the reel to a solid surface using at least four M8 or 5/16” bolts through the chassis cross angles or tapped holes. Ensure the reel is stable and level .
2. Connect Non-Rotating Cables: Attach the vehicle, vessel, or ground optical cable to the non-rotating connectors on the reel side as required .
3. Prepare the Deployment Cable: Insert the fiber optic cable into the drum exit port, aligning fibers with the slots in the exit cover, and snap the cover into place .

Cable Management

1. Secure the Cable: Rotate the drum 180° clockwise and use a zip tie to attach the cable to the tie-down block .
2. Adjust Drum Tension: If the reel has a drag brake, set it to the desired tension to prevent uncontrolled unwinding .
3. Wind the Cable: Use the crank handle to wind the cable onto the reel. Stow the handle properly after winding .
4. Maintain Minimum Bend Radius: Lay the cable in a figure-8 pattern or gentle loops to avoid kinking. Ensure the cable is not bent beyond the manufacturer's minimum bend radius .

Connecting to the Junction Box

1. Insert Cable into Junction Box: Carefully remove the outer sheath of the fiber optic cable and feed it through the junction box openings .
2. Terminate or Splice: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to connect the fiber to adapters, pigtails, or terminal blocks inside the junction box .
3. Check Connections: Ensure all connections are tight and secure. Test the fiber with a suitable optical test device to confirm signal integrity .

Final Checks and Maintenance

• Keep the junction box and reel free of dust and dirt.
