Russian Active Optical Device 400G

The Russian Active Optical Device 400G is a pluggable digital coherent optical (DCO) module designed for high-speed 400Gb/s network transmission, supporting flexible baud rates and long-reach applications.

Overview

The Russian 400G Active Optical Device is powered by the PSE-V Compact (PSE-Vc), part of the PSE-V family of coherent optics. It supports operation across a wide range of baud rates from 30 to 69GBaud, making it suitable for scaling network capacity in access, metro aggregation, and core networks (AITAF) . These modules are designed to be pluggable, allowing integration into router or switch interface ports in QSFP-DD or similar form factors.

Key Features

  • Data Rate: 400 Gb/s, with flexible line rates to accommodate different network requirements.
  • Modulation Formats: Supports advanced modulation schemes such as QPSK, 8QAM, and 16QAM, enabling optimization of reach versus spectral efficiency (Nokia) .
  • Reach: Depending on modulation and amplification, the device can achieve distances from 40 km up to 600 km, with potential for even longer distances using sub-rate modulation and external amplification (Nokia) .
  • Forward Error Correction (FEC): High-gain FEC is employed to maximize performance and extend reach, similar to 400ZR+ modules (Nokia) .
  • Pluggable Form Factor: QSFP-DD compatible, allowing easy deployment in routers, switches, and data center interconnects (AITAF, Juniper) .
  • Network Applications: Ideal for metro, regional edge, core networks, and data center interconnects, supporting both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations (Nokia, Juniper) .

Comparison with 400ZR/400ZR+ Modules

The Russian 400G DCO shares many characteristics with 400ZR and OpenZR+ coherent optics:

  • Both support pluggable coherent optics for high-density deployments.
  • Both utilize advanced FEC and modulation schemes to optimize reach and spectral efficiency.
  • OpenZR+ modules, like the JCO400 series, allow flexible channelization and vendor-agnostic management using OpenConfig models, which may also be applicable to Russian 400G devices in multi-vendor environments (Juniper) .

Deployment Considerations

  • Integration: Can be deployed in existing optical networks with minimal changes, supporting IP-over-DWDM architectures.
  • Scalability: Suitable for scaling from access networks to core networks due to flexible baud rates and modulation options.
  • Operational Efficiency: Designed for low power consumption and simplified provisioning, similar to other 400G coherent pluggables (Juniper) . In summary, the Russian Active Optical Device 400G is a versatile, high-performance coherent optical module capable of supporting modern 400Gb/s network demands, with flexible modulation, long reach, and pluggable deployment suitable for metro, edge, and core network applications.
