Understanding the Setup

A distribution box (DB) distributes electrical power from a main supply to multiple circuits, including lighting and socket outlets. Each socket or group of sockets is typically connected to a radial sub-circuit protected by a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) or fuse, which prevents overloads and short circuits . For domestic installations, a 230V single-phase supply is common, with a main MCB controlling the overall input and individual MCBs for each socket circuit .

Wiring Sockets

  1. Sub-Circuit Planning: Determine the number of sockets per circuit. For example, a 13A radial circuit can supply multiple socket outlets, but the total load should not exceed the MCB rating .
  2. Wire Selection: Use appropriate wire sizes—typically 2.5mm² for socket circuits. Larger loads like air conditioners may require 4mm² or higher .
  3. Connection to DB: Connect the phase (live) wire from the sub-circuit to the MCB input, the neutral wire to the neutral bus bar, and the earth wire to the earth bus bar inside the DB .
  4. MCB Rating: Choose MCBs according to the expected load. For standard sockets, a 16A MCB is common, while lighting circuits may use 6–10A .
  5. Safety Devices: Install an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) to protect against leakage currents and electric shocks. The RCCB rating should match the main MCB .

Installation Tips

  • Arrange circuit breakers from left to right, leaving reserved positions on the right for future expansion .
  • Maintain proper wire color coding: blue for neutral, brown or black for phase, and green/yellow for earth .
  • Bind wires neatly with plastic ties and ensure clear labeling of circuits and voltage levels .
  • Perform a safety inspection after wiring to check for short circuits, overloads, and proper connections .
