How to check optical module pairing

To confirm that optical modules are a compatible pair, verify matching specifications, connector types, wavelengths, and test the link using optical power measurements or loopback testing.

Check Module Specifications

Ensure both modules are compatible in terms of:

  • Type and form factor: SFP, SFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, etc.
  • Wavelength and transmission distance: For example, 850 nm for short-range multimode or 1310/1550 nm for single-mode links .
  • Data rate support: Both modules must support the same speed (e.g., 10G, 25G, 100G), .
  • Connector type: LC, MPO, or MTP®; male MPO must mate with female MPO .

Use Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM)

Most modern optical modules provide real-time monitoring of transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) power, temperature, and voltage. By reading these values via switch commands or management software, you can confirm that the modules are operating within expected ranges and are compatible .

Optical Power Measurement

Check the EEPROM or DOM data on each module using switch commands (e.g., show inventory or ethtool on Linux). Confirm that the modules are MSA-compliant, have matching vendor specifications, and are intended for the same link type .

Physical and Connector Checks

  • Ensure clean and undamaged fiber connectors.
  • Confirm polarity and pin alignment for MPO/MTP connections .
  • For multi-fiber links, verify that the fiber mapping matches the module requirements. By combining specification verification, diagnostic monitoring, optical power testing, loopback tests, and physical inspection, you can confidently confirm that two optical modules form a compatible and functional pair.
