Wiring of Fiber Optic Sensors and Modules

Fiber optic sensors and modules require careful wiring of power, output, and control connections, along with proper fiber handling to ensure reliable operation.

Components Overview

A typical fiber optic sensor system consists of three main parts: the amplifier unit, the fiber optic cable, and the sensing head. The amplifier contains the light source (LED or laser diode), photodetector, and output electronics, while the fiber transmits light to and from the sensing area. Modules like the HFBR-1414 transmitter and HFBR-2412 receiver are commonly used for optical communication links in industrial applications .

Power Supply Wiring

Most industrial fiber optic amplifiers operate on DC voltages (12–24V DC). Standard wiring involves connecting V+ (brown wire) to the positive supply and V- or COM (blue wire) to the negative or common return. Correct polarity is essential to prevent damage. Some models support AC power (90–250V AC), with terminals labeled L (Line) and N (Neutral) .

Output Signal Wiring

Fiber optic sensors can have NPN (sinking), PNP (sourcing), or relay outputs:

  • NPN output: Connect the load (PLC input, relay, or lamp) between the output terminal (black wire) and V+. When the sensor detects an object, the transistor switches to V-, completing the circuit.
  • PNP output: Connect the load between the output terminal and V-. The transistor switches to V+ when activated.
  • Relay output: Provides isolated contacts (NO, NC, COM) to switch AC or DC loads independently of the sensor's power supply . Many amplifiers include adjustable sensitivity via a potentiometer or digital interface, allowing fine-tuning of detection thresholds.

Fiber Connection and Handling

Fiber optic cables can be plastic or glass, with connectors such as ST, SC, or FC. Proper handling is critical:

  • Avoid sharp bends or kinks.
  • Keep connectors clean to prevent signal loss.
  • Use protective jackets or tubing in harsh environments.
  • For short experimental setups, PMMA plastic fibers can be cut with scissors and inserted into modules without polishing .

Installation Tips

  • Surface mounting: Use adhesives like M-Bond 200 or AE-10 for strain or vibration sensing, followed by a protective layer such as RTV silicone .
  • Tape mounting: Efficient for temporary or flexible installations.
  • Always disconnect power before wiring and wear PPE such as insulated gloves and safety glasses .
  • Verify compatibility of fiber length, connector type, and amplifier voltage with your system.
