Steps for splicing indoor optical cables

Indoor optical cables are typically spliced using either fusion splicing for permanent, low-loss connections or mechanical splicing for quicker, temporary joins.

Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most common and reliable method for indoor fiber optic cables. It involves aligning the fiber cores precisely and using an electric arc to melt and fuse them into a single continuous fiber. This creates a permanent joint with minimal signal loss and back reflection, making it ideal for high-speed data transmission in offices, data centers, and enterprise networks . Procedure:

  1. Strip the protective coating from the fiber ends.
  2. Clean the bare fibers with alcohol wipes.
  3. Use a fusion splicer to automatically align the fiber cores.
  4. Apply an electric arc to fuse the fibers.
  5. Protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve to restore mechanical strength. Advantages:
  • Very low insertion loss (typically 0.01–0.03 dB)
  • Durable and permanent connection
  • High reliability for long-term indoor networks Disadvantages:

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing is a simpler, faster method that aligns two fiber ends within a small housing using an index-matching gel. The fibers are held in place mechanically rather than fused, allowing light to pass through with minimal reflection . Procedure:

  1. Strip and clean the fiber ends.
  2. Insert the fibers into a mechanical splice assembly.
  3. Apply index-matching gel to reduce light loss.
  4. Secure the assembly with a snap or adhesive cover. Advantages:
  • Quick and easy to perform
  • Lower initial equipment cost
  • Can be used for temporary or emergency connections Disadvantages:
  • Higher insertion loss (typically 0.2–0.75 dB)
  • Less durable over time
  • Slightly higher back reflection compared to fusion splicing

Choosing the Right Method for Indoor Installations

  • Fusion splicing is preferred for permanent indoor backbones, data centers, and high-speed networks where long-term performance is critical.
  • Mechanical splicing is suitable for temporary connections, emergency repairs, or short indoor runs where speed and simplicity are more important than minimal loss. In indoor structured cabling, the choice between fusion and mechanical splicing depends on performance requirements, budget, and the specific installation environment.
