Cameroon's national telecom operator, Camtel, is rolling out an additional 3,500 km of fiber optic cable starting in 2024, increasing the total network from 15,000 km to 18,500 km . This expansion prioritizes rural and underserved areas, aiming to improve last-mile connectivity and support public services, e-commerce, and tech startups . The network already links Cameroon to neighboring countries such as Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo, positioning the country as a regional digital hub .
Cameroon has access to five submarine cables, including WACS, SAT3, NCSCS, and SAIL, which connect the country to West Africa and Brazil . Partnerships with companies like MTN GlobalConnect enhance the commercialization and utilization of these cables, improving international bandwidth and supporting high-capacity data transmission . This infrastructure is critical for deploying advanced multicore fibers, such as 12-core optical fiber, which require robust backhaul and terminal equipment to manage inter-core crosstalk and spatial multiplexing .
12-core optical fiber represents a significant advancement over conventional single- or four-core fibers. Unlike uncoupled four-core fibers, 12-core fibers use coupled spatial multiplexing, which requires specialized transmission and demodulation technologies to handle inter-core interference and crosstalk . This technology enables ultra-high-capacity transmission, suitable for transoceanic or large-scale national networks, and could be integrated into Cameroon's expanding fiber backbone to support future digital demands .
Cameroon has secured a CFA 108 billion ($195 million) loan from China Exim Bank for Phase IV of the National Fiber Optic Backbone Project, focusing on connecting underserved areas and modernizing digital infrastructure .
