How to connect the expansion circuit of the distribution box

To connect an expansion circuit in a distribution box, you must safely connect the main supply to the new breakers, distribute the load across protective devices, and ensure proper earthing and neutral connections.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Safety First Always turn off the main power supply before starting any work to prevent electrical shock. Use insulated tools and verify the absence of voltage with a tester before touching any wires . 2. Identify Components A typical distribution box includes:

  • Main MCB (Double Pole): Controls the overall power supply.
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Protects against earth leakage.
  • Single-Pole or Double-Pole MCBs: Protect individual circuits.
  • Neutral and Earth Links: Distribute neutral and earth connections to all circuits . 3. Connect the Main Supply
  • Connect the incoming phase (live) and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the Main MCB.
  • Ensure the Main MCB rating matches the total load capacity of the distribution box . 4. Connect the RCCB
  • Connect the output of the Main MCB to the input of the RCCB.
  • The RCCB will then feed the downstream MCBs, providing earth leakage protection . 5. Add the Expansion Circuit
  • Install a new MCB in an available slot.
  • Connect the phase wire of the new circuit to the input of the new MCB.
  • Connect the neutral wire to the neutral link and the earth wire to the earth link.
  • For double-pole MCBs, connect both phase and neutral from the RCCB output to the MCB input . 6. Distribute Load Across Phases
  • If your system is multi-phase, balance the new circuit across the phases to prevent overloading a single phase .
  • Check the amperage of each MCB to ensure it matches the connected load. 7. Verify Connections
  • Label each circuit clearly for identification.
  • Use a multimeter to check for correct voltage and continuity.
  • Ensure no loose connections or exposed wires remain . 8. Compliance and Testing
  • Follow local electrical standards (e.g., NEN1010, NEN3140 in Europe) for safety and compliance .
  • Test the new circuit under load to confirm proper operation and protection. By following these steps, the expansion circuit will be safely integrated into the distribution box, ensuring reliable power distribution and protection for all connected devices .
