Techniques for dissolving fiber optic cables

Fiber optic cables cannot be safely dissolved with household chemicals due to their glass and polymer construction.

Fiber optic cables are made primarily of silica glass fibers surrounded by protective polymer coatings and jackets . The glass core is extremely durable and resistant to most chemicals, while the polymer layers may degrade under strong solvents, but attempting to dissolve the cable can release hazardous fumes and pose serious safety risks. There is no practical or safe method to chemically dissolve fiber optic cables at home or in typical industrial settings.

Safe Handling and Disposal

Instead of attempting to dissolve them, fiber optic cables should be handled and disposed of safely:

  • Cut and bundle: Use proper tools to cut the cable into manageable lengths, avoiding splintering the glass fibers .
  • Protective equipment: Wear gloves and eye protection to prevent injury from tiny glass shards .
  • Recycling: Many regions have specialized recycling programs for fiber optic cables, where the glass and metals (if present) are recovered safely. Contact local electronic waste or telecommunications recycling centers.
  • Avoid burning or chemical exposure: Burning or using strong acids/solvents can release toxic fumes from the polymer coatings.

Alternative Approaches

For network upgrades or cable removal, the focus should be on mechanical removal and recycling rather than chemical dissolution. Fiber optic cables can be safely removed from devices using proper connector disengagement techniques, such as gently releasing SC, LC, or ST connectors along the axis of the connector . After removal, the cables can be sent to certified recycling facilities. In summary, dissolving fiber optic cables is not feasible or safe. The recommended approach is careful mechanical handling, cutting, and recycling through certified programs to protect both people and the environment .
