Proper fiber optic sensor installation ensures accurate measurements and reliable operation, using surface or embedded mounting, suitable adhesives, and correct connector practices.

Surface and Embedded Installation

Fiber optic sensors (FOS) can be installed either on the surface of a structure or embedded within materials. Surface installation is common for metallic or composite surfaces and involves cleaning, abrading, and conditioning the surface before bonding the fiber with adhesives such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10. After curing, a protective layer like RTV silicone can shield the fiber from harsh environments . Embedded installation is suitable for applications where the fiber is integrated into composite materials, providing high-fidelity strain measurements without surface exposure .

Adhesive and Tape Methods

Adhesive bonding is widely used for high-resolution FOS. Epoxies like M-Bond 200 offer strong adhesion and rapid room-temperature curing, suitable for short-term and long-term applications within specified temperature ranges (-32°C to 65°C long-term), . Tape installation is an alternative for non-horizontal or vertical surfaces, where a pre-attached fiber on tape is applied to a prepared surface with a liquid activator, requiring approximately 24 hours to cure .

Cable Selection and Positioning

For distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) in structural monitoring, the cable type, installation method, and environmental conditions are critical. Cables must efficiently transfer strain from the structure to the fiber. Options include embedding in concrete, attaching to surfaces, direct burial, or conduit installation. For large structures, optical cables may serve dual purposes for sensing and communication, requiring careful planning for protection and compliance with local regulations .

Fiber Connections and Splicing

Fiber optic connections typically use FC/APC connectors for sensor units. For longer runs or field installations, fusion splicing is recommended to minimize signal loss. Proper handling of fibers during splicing and connectorization is essential to maintain measurement accuracy and prevent damage .

Installation Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation: Clean, abrade, and neutralize the surface before bonding.
  2. Adhesive Application: Apply a thin, uniform layer of epoxy or bonding agent.
  3. Curing: Allow sufficient time for adhesive or tape to fully cure.
  4. Protection: Apply RTV silicone or other protective coatings for environmental exposure.
  5. Routing: Avoid sharp bends and mechanical stress on fibers.
  6. Testing: Verify strain readings or signal integrity after installation to ensure proper performance . By following these guidelines, fiber optic sensors can provide high-resolution, distributed measurements for strain, temperature, or vibration monitoring across various industrial and civil applications.
