Configuration Method for Optical Module Routers

Configuring a router's optical module involves safely installing the module, connecting it to the network, and setting operational parameters such as gain or power control.

Physical Installation of Optical Modules

  1. Safety Precautions: Always wear a grounded ESD wrist strap and work on an ESD-safe mat to prevent electrostatic discharge damage. Handle the module by its sides or metal cage, keeping dust caps in place until insertion .
  2. Inspect and Align: Check the SFP/QSFP port and module for debris or damage. Identify the alignment key on the module and match it to the port keyway; modules only fit one way .
  3. Insertion: Slide the module straight into the port with firm, even pressure. Do not twist or rock the module. Push until it seats firmly and the latch clicks .
  4. Removal: To remove, disengage the latch and pull the module straight out. Avoid bending or forcing the module to prevent port damage .

Software Configuration

  1. Access the Router CLI: Connect via console, SSH, or web interface depending on your router model.
  2. Enable or Disable the Module: Some routers allow remote online insertion and removal (OIR) by disabling and re-enabling the module through CLI. This can simulate physical reseating and help troubleshoot link issues .
  3. Set Operational Mode: For advanced modules like QDD Optical Line System (OLS), configure either gain control or power control mode:
    • Gain Control Mode: Set the desired amplifier gain.
    • Power Control Mode: Set the desired output transmit power (TX), .
  4. Verify Configuration: Check module status, alarms, and performance metrics such as TX/RX power, laser bias current, and temperature thresholds. Ensure no detected alarms or faults are present .
  5. Connect Network Devices: Once configured, connect the optical module to the corresponding device or fiber link. For routers connected to an ONT or ONU, ensure the router's WAN port is linked correctly and bridge mode is enabled if required .

Best Practices

  • Use reputable optical modules compatible with your router to ensure stability and low power consumption .
  • Regularly monitor module performance and alarms to prevent link degradation.
  • Keep firmware and software updated to support the latest optical module features and operational modes . By following these steps, you can safely install, configure, and optimize the optical module on your router, ensuring reliable high-speed network connectivity.
