Five Classification Standards for Optical Cables

Optical cables can be classified into five main types based on mode, environment, structure, application, and protection features.

1. Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)

Single-mode fibers have a small core diameter (typically 8–10 microns) that allows only one light mode to propagate. They are ideal for long-distance communication and high-bandwidth applications, such as telecommunications and internet backbone networks, because they minimize signal attenuation and dispersion .

2. Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Multimode fibers have a larger core (50–62.5 microns) that supports multiple light modes. They are suitable for shorter distances, such as within data centers or office LANs, and are cost-effective for high-speed local networks .

3. Indoor vs. Outdoor Cables

  • Indoor cables are designed for controlled environments, such as offices or data centers. They are flexible, lightweight, and often flame-retardant to meet building safety codes .
  • Outdoor cables are built to withstand harsh conditions, including UV exposure, moisture, and temperature variations. They may include water-blocking gels or armored layers for protection .

4. Armored vs. Non-Armored Cables

  • Armored cables have a protective metal or composite layer to resist physical damage, making them suitable for direct burial or areas with high risk of rodent damage .
  • Non-armored cables are lighter and easier to install in ducts or risers where mechanical protection is less critical.

5. Specialty Cables

These include aerial, duct, flat drop, and underwater cables, designed for specific deployment scenarios:

  • Aerial cables are suspended on poles.
  • Duct cables are installed in conduits.
  • Flat drop cables connect individual buildings or floors.
  • Underwater cables are engineered for submarine communication with high durability and water resistance . These five classifications help network designers and engineers select the appropriate optical cable based on distance, bandwidth, environment, and protection requirements, ensuring reliable and efficient data transmission.
