How to determine the direction of an optical cable

When we need to determine the direction of fiber signal flow we can utilize a nifty little tool called a fiber identifier. A fiber optic link's transmit signal (Tx) at end of the cable must match. A fiber identifier is used to detect the presence of an optical signal in a fiber – an active fiber. The instrument works by bending the fiber, causing stress loss, then measuring the light. Patch cord polarity defines the directional optical path between two transceivers, ensuring that the transmit (Tx) signal from one device reaches the receive (Rx) port of the other. Because fiber duplex links rely on matched transmit-receive alignment, polarity determines how cables, connectors.
