Specify the root port of the core switch

The root port on a core switch is the port with the lowest path cost to the root bridge, automatically selected by STP, and can be influenced by port cost and priority settings.

Understanding the Root Port

In a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) topology, the root port (RP) is the port on a switch that provides the shortest path to the root bridge for a given VLAN or spanning-tree instance. Each non-root switch has exactly one root port per VLAN, which is always in the forwarding state to reach the root bridge efficiently . The root port is determined based on:

  • Path cost: Lower cumulative cost to the root bridge is preferred.
  • Bridge ID of the root: If multiple paths have the same cost, the switch with the lower bridge ID is preferred.
  • Port priority: Used as a tiebreaker when multiple ports have equal path cost to the root .

Configuring or Influencing the Root Port

While the root port is automatically selected by STP, you can influence which port becomes the root port by:

  1. Adjusting port cost: Lowering the STP path cost on a specific interface increases its likelihood of being chosen as the root port.
  2. Changing port priority: Lowering the port priority can also influence root port selection when path costs are equal.
  3. Using port channels: Aggregating multiple links into a port channel ensures STP treats them as a single logical link, which can become the root port without recalculating the topology . For example, on a Cisco switch, you can adjust the path cost of a Gigabit Ethernet interface:

Switch(config)# interface Gi1/0/1Switch(config-if)# spanning-tree cost 4

Or adjust the port priority:

Switch(config-if)# spanning-tree port-priority 64

Best Practices

  • Core or distribution switches should be configured as the root bridge for their respective VLANs to optimize traffic flow .
  • Access switches should not be configured as root bridges.
  • When using StackWise Virtual or port channels, STP treats the stack or aggregated link as a single bridge node, and one link becomes the root port while others may be blocked .
  • Always verify the root port using:

Switch# show spanning-tree vlan

This command displays the root port, designated ports, and port roles for the VLAN. By understanding and influencing the root port selection, you can ensure optimal Layer 2 path redundancy and prevent loops while maintaining efficient traffic flow in your network.
